Always follow your doctor's recommendations. Here are some general tips:
Eczema tips for Parents: Teens and Adolescents
- Healthy skin care. Encourage your teen with eczema to use moisturizers generously and often. There are many options you can discuss with your doctor. Also have him or her use mild, fragrance-free skin cleansers rather than harsh cleansers and soaps. Ointments are generally preferred for dry skin
- Careful makeup use. The face has some of the most sensitive skin on our bodies. Help your teen research makeup products before purchasing them to find out which ones will not dry out the skin or trigger allergic reactions
- The right clothes. Encourage your teen with eczema to wear breathable materials that are not scratchy or rough—cotton is best—and to wear loose-fitting clothes that won't irritate itchy skin
- The right sunscreen. Sunscreen is a necessity for anyone who is outside a lot. Help your teen research sunscreens before buying one and choose the product with the least amount of harsh chemicals
- Minimize stress. Physical appearance is very important to teens. Help your teen with eczema avoid becoming self-conscious about his or her skin condition since stress can actually make eczema worse. Remind your teen that eczema may clear up during adolescence
